Vancouvers homeless population is growing at a rate many would consider and argue, is alarming. The problem of
homelessness in the city of Vancouver generally refers to the downtown east side. Although, many other suburbs face the
same growing crisis: Vancouver's east side has developed a notorious reputation as being one of the poorest neighborhoods
in Canada.
The research topic I wish to write on will discuss current and past initiatives to deal with the problem of homelessness.
I will also touch on and critically discuss other problems this neighborhood faces such as, substance abuse, social
disorder and crime in general.
Homelessness is not a simple problem with a simple solution. The impacts this problem has on our many public agencies
is ever increasing in a negative way. Understanding what the problem of homelessness actually is, is only the start. It
is my goal to provide a good working definition of the problem. In addition, my research will be informative and useful
for anyone seeking further information on this topic.
I will do my best to provide all the neccessary information a reader would need to develop an opinion of thier
own, but I will also construct an argument relating to how I find current policy to be ineffective and why. I will specifically
look at the Four Pillars Approach, discuss the policy and provide a critical analysis of its implementatin and why I believe
it does little to solve issues related to homelessness.
I feel it is most important to look closely at these policies and the agencies currently working toward a solution.
It is my belief that many agencies and policies were developed to address issues that are symptoms of homelessness as opposed
to the issues that actually create these conditions.
My Interest,
I am a long time Vancouver resident, to be more specific I am an east side resident. The experience of living
in a neighborhood like mine has motivated me to write and do research on the topic of homelessness in Vancouver. I invite
any of you to email me personally with questions or comments about what I am writing on. Perhaps many of you are also residents,
I would love to hear from you.
